5. ‘What Are You Into?’ Maybe we Should All be Asking This.

Someone recently asked me, “Parker’s becoming older now, what is she into?”

I feel like this is a pretty standard question for kids. It’s simple and direct and gives a pretty accurate little snapshot of the kid.

Beckham is SO into Where’s Waldo books. He says “yook yook yook yook!!!!”

Wouldn’t it be brilliant if we spoke to our adult friends this way? Imagine all the things we could learn.

A weekend family treat, driving around with hot cocoa looking at the fall leaves on some of the beautiful roads in town.

It could be a catalyst for more meaningful conversations, a step away from small talk.

It could remind us of things we were interested in that fell off of our radar. How wonderful.

Broccoli sprouts doing their thing. These might be my top pick for the most nutritional addition to our diet. WAY more nutritious than mature broccoli. How incredible is THAT!?

What are you into? It’s all encompassing of hobbies, passions, talents, pleasures.

What would your list say? Would you have to pause and really think about it? Awkwardly chuckling when you realize you have given it no prior thought. Or are your passions and interests at the forefront of your mind?

Before you even have this conversation with another, which you should absolutely do, I recommend you enjoy it with your inner child.

While a journal is my preferred medium (pen and paper releases the subconscious thoughts in a way typing can’t access) it’s not the only way. If it means sitting down and enjoying this exercise or not doing it at all at all, then typing in the notes on your phone or emailing them to yourself to save your list is a great way too.

So, what are you into?

After I answered about Parker and realized how much I enjoyed the question, I asked our new friend the same question. What a surprise. Once she was done laughing about the fun of applying a typical kid’s question to herself, she liked it.

She seemed excited and said, “Let me get back to you!” About an hour later, I got a long list, and a note about how cathartic it was for her. For me, it was great hearing so much of what is on her heart and of interest to her.

And you know what, when my new friend and I see each other now, we have no time for small talk. Now that I know these topics that interest her (some of which I have no idea about) I really enjoy learning about them from her.

Life is fascinating. Sometimes it just comes down to asking the right questions. Seeing things from a different perspective.

This one little question can help you to see the topics you could be learning in a faster and more enjoyable way.

Love the crisp fall air.

As a general life rule, I explain to the kids, each person you meet is guaranteed to know at least one thing (probably many many more) and different things that you don’t. We have something to learn from EVERYONE. How exciting is that?

I sat down and made my list. Because, of course, I got the question asked of myself, so in no particular order:

I’m into….Spiritual, emotional, mental, physical health in balance. Reading about philosophy, etc. Vibrant delicious organic meals. Homeopathy and healing the body naturally. Neurology and neuroplasticity. Hiking, camping, travel, road-trips. Journaling. Peaceful parenting. Minimalism. Clearing stored emotions in the body. High vibrational intentional present moments. Helping people. Mindfulness. Meditation, prayer. Exercising especially enjoyed at the gym. Creating memories for my kids. Being generous. Cooking and creating epic delicious meals full of powerhouse nutrition and vibrant fresh ingredients. Trying new organic restaurants and chefs’ creations. Hearing stories of people showing up for each other. Feel good, destination Hallmark movies. Getting my toes in the sand feeling those negative ions. Traveling to all of the epic places on my list and marveling. And of course, surrendering to the flow of life.

What’s on yours???

Xo, Katie
